Regardless of age and experience, interviews can be daunting and people often emerge from an interview believing/knowing that they have put across the wrong image largely because they have not given sufficient thought to the process prior to the actual face-to-face interview. Ones confidence level and overall performance can be optimised though by careful preparation in advance.
- Remember, an interview is a two way process – you are present to answer questions of course so that the company can be sure that you match the qualities you claim to have, but you are also there to ask appropriate questions to find out more about the company, the role, to see if both parties believe it is a genuinely good match.
- Sound and thorough preparation across all facets will not guarantee that you are offered every job that you apply for, but it should ensure that you give a creditable performance and that the experience is a positive encounter for both parties!
- There is no template that will give you the “perfect” interview performance, and it is a serious mistake to approach it as an actor i.e. rehearsing and memorising answers to questions like a script. If you do and something unexpected happens it will be obvious that you are not at ease and your confidence and performance may well go into a downward spiral!
- Interview styles vary in their style and quality, from informal and chatty, to strictly competency based against a tight job description.
- Remember the impression formed in an interview consists of
- Over 50% of what we see
- Around 40% of how we hear
- And only 10% of what we hear
First impressions count, so make sure the interview works for you from the start. |
